I got my RISD dorm room assignment today. I am pleased to report that I was assigned a lovely, spacious, and irregularly shaped corner room. Things as a Brown/RISD Dual-Degree student just keep getting better and better. I keep thanking the Universe for my good fortune.

I can’t wait to arrive. I am counting the days.

ourrisd:

Good news for RISD: our alumni magazine, RISD XYZ, has won a Gold award for Best Overall Magazine (in the circulation under 30,000 category) in the national 2012 CASE Circle of Excellence Awards (see College and University General Interest Magazines).

If you’ve never heard of it, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education is an international professional organization for people who work in the communications, alumni relations, fundraising and advancement areas of colleges and universities around the world.

The 2012 awards are based on work produced and disseminated in 2011, meaning we submitted the Winter, Spring/Summer and Fall 2011 issues of XYZ for consideration. Our Fall 2011 Beauty of Books cover, illustrated by the amazing Chandler O’Leary 03 IL, also earned a separate Bronze award for Excellence in Design.

Earlier this year RISD XYZ won two Golds in the CASE District 1 competition, which covers the northeast region of the US: one for Best Overall Magazine (circulation under 30,000) and one for Best Design.

XYZmail, the monthly electronic newsletter affiliated with the magazine, won a Bronze in its category in the District 1 awards, where RISD’s primary website also earned an Honorable Mention. Yaaaay!

BROWN / RISD DUAL-DEGREE!!!!!!!!

I am so thankful for my life. My friends. My teachers. My family. My experiences. All of this. All of the moments leading up to this. I have been accepted to the Brown / RISD Dual-Degree program and have received generous financial aid. I have been granted the opportunity of a lifetime, and my family will not have the burden of paying for it. I got into every college I applied to, and the feeling that all of my work has paid off is incredible. I did what I loved, threw myself into every project, and emerged victorious.

For anyone out there struggling with whether to do what you love or to do what is expected of you, choose the former. For anyone who thinks that you have to choose between being an artist and being a scholar, think again. For anyone who cannot separate art from life, from learning, from love, there is a world out there waiting for people like you.

RISD decisions have been DELAYED until MONDAY

WHY WHY WHY! I CANNOT WAIT ANY LONGER.

RISD has informed undergraduate applicants, that decision e-mails/letters will not be sent out until Monday. While I understand and respect their desire to make sure everything is properly in order……

My bones are rattling in my skin. I need to know right now.

Universe, please be good to me. Please make RISD accept me. Please.

My other RISD home test. Use both sides of the paper, they said. So, I made a book but still kept the integrity of the single sheet of paper. This work was inspired by my favorite line of Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself, “I loafe and invite my soul, I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass”. Medium: acrylic on paper.

This is my RISD home test drawing. I replaced the dinosaur skeletons typically seen in museum lobbies with an imagined bicycle sculpture. I am actually pretty proud of this one…(a rare feeling in my world). I send this into the world tomorrow. Wish me luck.
